Last updated : 2026-04-18
Costs of a Legal Proceeding
Legal costs vary by canton and depend on the amount in dispute. The losing party generally bears its own costs as well as those of the opposing party (art. 106 CPC). Free legal aid is available in certain areas: labor disputes up to CHF 30,000, rental disputes up to CHF 5,000, and first-instance proceedings under the LEg. The court sets a partial reimbursement for covering part of the winning party's lawyer fees (art. 95 CPC). Advance payments for legal costs are generally required at the beginning of the proceeding.
